Tasmania’s rich history in fishing can be traced back centuries to when the island was first inhabited by Aboriginal people. The indigenous communities had a deep understanding of the surrounding waters and relied on fishing as a vital source of food and sustenance. Today, Tasmania’s fishing industry has evolved to include both commercial and recreational sectors, each playing a significant role in the island’s economy and culture.

In order to manage and maintain such growth, TARfish, a fully independent peak body has been set up to represent Tasmania’s recreational fishers while also being fully recognised by the government. Their goal is to protect, promote and create sustainable, accessible, enjoyable and safe fishing for the benefit of Tasmanians.
